Terrance hears the dead talk but can they help him save those who are still alive?
Alex has no idea a ghost called Billy is following him around. Then a strange young man comes up to him in a public place and tells him someone is sitting at his table. Terrance talks to the dead. To him it's a curse. Labeled psychotic, the dead have kept him from truly living. When he meets Alex, Terrance wants to be normal. Alex doesn't believe that Terrance can communicate with dead folks. But when his best friend disappears, Alex begins to think that Terrance may be the only one who can bring his best friend back alive.

I came across this novel while researching the publisher and was drawn to the story in terms of genre and paranormal themes - I'm a sucker for a good ghost story, and enjoy reading/writing urban fantasy.Anyway, what a treat! I'll confess that this is my first encounter with a homosexual romance plot line (unless you count fanfic), but romance is romance and when two characters connect on an emotional level as Alex and Terrance did, well that's great storytelling and great writing. Poor Billy, though - I felt pretty badly for him. Due to circumstances beyond his control, real romance wasn't in the cards for him. His dynamic with Terrance was at times humorous, heartwarming, and heartbreaking nonetheless.
I found the plot engaging, the pacing spot-on, and the characters well-developed and interesting. Mr. Manly's universe toes the line between fantasy and reality beautifully, and I enjoyed getting lost in this universe for a while.
Thanks for the fabulous read and for broadening my literary horizons!

The Severing edition by DJ Manly Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
This book starts out with Billy the ghost who was hurt tragically and can't move on because of it..
You find out there are more like Billy who can't move on for the very same reason. They find Terrance "AKA" Dark who can communicate with the dead and wow!!! This book was so good! Alex and Terrence hunt down a serial killer and at the same time they are growing closer to each other.
This had the prefect amount of paranormal, angst and action.
Terence feels like he is going crazy because the ghosts and the voices come to him all the time..
Alex is trying to find his friend Wes who was takin from the club by the killer.
I do not want to go into much more and give away any spoilers..
All together I really liked this book and thought it was the perfect start to this series!
I would recommend this book!
I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Inked Rainbow Reads.
This book reminded me a bit of the TV series "The Ghost Whisperer" except with a five o'clock shadow and no cute husband! The story starts with Billy as the main focus but we soon learn that Billy is dead and that he's visiting Alex the guy who took over his job only it's against the rules of Limbo and turns out that Alex isn't the MC either! We finally meet the MC, Terrance, a bit later. He, like the little boy in The Sixth Sense, can see dead people and it's kinda driven him crazy. In fact he's a diagnosed schizophrenic who's got a kind of casual relationship with his meds...
This is the first in a series and it does set the series up well while moving at a fast pace and wedging in the search for a demented serial killer that is preying on gay men. None of the characters are all that well developed but they are likable and the book has a roller coaster quality to it. Author D.J. Manly has over 200 distinct titles to his credit and he's an able writer and storyteller but his work has a certain made-for-TV quality about it that makes me think I'll be glad to read his other work but I'll NOT be revisiting it again and again as I do with my favorites. On the whole it reminded me a bit of junk food. Tasty fare but not a lot of nourishment for the soul, the intellect or the psyche.
If you're content with a novel that provides a fun time without touching upon any "great truths" or that instills in you some deeper understanding of the human condition, this one can be fun. And at 215 pages, it's a lightning fast read, leaving you plenty of time to get your philosophical fiber elsewhere.
